LAN Standardization
One of the most challenging aspects of managing an enterprise Wide Area Network (WAN) is maintaining control and standardization of the many remote office Local Area Networks (LANs) that make up the enterprise WAN. Reliable delivery of business applications and data to each desktop in the enterprise is dependent upon an IT department’s ability to guarantee certain standards for configuration, throughput and availability of all Infrastructure components in the remote offices.
IT departments often struggle with the enforcement of IT policies in remote offices, as local managers allow modifications to remote LANs in the interest of “getting the job done”. Sometime office managers hire local contractors without fully understanding the impact of their modifications to the network. The local Infrastructure may consist of a series of cabling efforts completed by a succession of property owners which lacks uniform standards and naming conventions.
Remote offices may have been connected to the WAN quickly, during an acquisition event that did not allow for proper IT diligence or physical audit. As a result, there may be many remote offices in the WAN that are having difficulty maintaining proper connectivity for delivery of business applications. This makes IT support of the remote offices time consuming and expensive as help desks struggle to understand remote office Infrastructure. CBIG’s Infrastructure teams have years of experience providing help desk support to remote offices, know first- hand the issues related to the need for uniform network standards and design LAN Standardization and Tech Refresh projects with support in mind.
